Vietnam: Vinpearl Park – Nha Trang

One of Nha Trang’s biggest attractions is the Vinpearl amusement park. It is an offshore site which has loads of stuff to keep you busy for a day. The reviews I read were mixed but as long as you dont go expecting Disneyland you’ll have a great time.

Getting to the island itself is quite an adventure as you go vie the worlds longest cable car! The station is a way out of town so take the number 4 bus to the last stop for 7000vnd ($0.30). We just missed a bus but a taxi driver was nearby and took 4 of us there for 10000vnd ($0.50) each – not too bad at all but make sure you firmly agree a price in any cab.

Once at the cable car they check your tickets (550,000vnd / $27 / £18) and check your bags for food & drink which you can’t bring over, although bottled water is allowed. Then you hop in the 3km cable car and enjoy the ride over and the best views of Nha Trang you will get anywhere!

When you finally get across to the other side you can get stuck in! They have outdoor theme park rides and an indoor arcade where all the games are free…

On the other side of the park is a big waterpark with loads of slides. They have a changing area and you can rent lockers to put your stuff in for 20,000vnd ($1 – but you can’t dip in and out of it whenever you want, you have to pay again to retrieve and restash). The slides were all really fun. The only problem is the stairs to get up to the slides are made of foot destroying metal grating, but it’s worth the pain!

A strange quirk is that all the rides open and close throughout the day, mostly in a 1hr on/1hr off pattern. We speculated as to why, maybe to save water or reduce the need for as many staff? Either way it’s not too much of a hindrance. See below for an example.

Once we had done all the waterpark rides we got some food. Another plus for the park is that, unlike most theme parks in the world, the food is quite cheap. I got this bacon wrapped hot dog, chips and a drink for 55,000vnd ($2.50). It wasn’t the best meal ever of course but it sorted me out.

Following lunch we caught some rays on the beach. It was a lot calmer than the sea across the way in the city too, thanks to being a sheltered island bay.

We got nice and pink on the beach and carried on exploring the park. Another bonus attraction was the aquarium, with many species of reptile and amphibian as well as some great reef and fish displays.

We finished off the day with some more rides. The cable car queue was massive at around 5.30pm so we went in the arcade for a bit. A few Time Crisis and air hockey games later and the queue was gone. We hopped back on the cable car to enjoy the last of the sunset on the journey back.

All in all it was a great day out. There’s so much to do and you could easily stay longer. If you are in Nha Trang there aren’t many better things you can spend your cash on than a day in Vinpearl Land!
